A late afternoon/early evening hike to the Wilson Pimple at the base of Mt. Wilson, Red Rock Canyon, NV. I was hiking with my Nano ipod and towards the end of my hike I decided to check out the video capabilities of my Nano. I was kinda surprised at the quality of the video, considering the low light conditions and constant movement. No music plays while video recording is in progress.

On the night of 25th/ morning of 26th of July 2009 I was at the Mount Wilson observatory and got a chance to see one of the most impressive sights of my life! The impact scar of a impact on Jupiter (not the first Ive seen, I saw Shoemaker-Levy hit it back in 1994), but being given the chance to see such a scar through a 60 inch scope under good seeing is a once in a lifetime! I had to share this! Many thanks to Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association and the Mount Wilson Observatory Staff for making this possible. For the nerds of you out there. Hubble used this scope a lot too!

I went sledding with my friends on Mt Wilson in California and while going down this hill, I hit a rock really hard and my tailbone was in such pain for god knows how long. Unfortunately, I made two holes in the sled from Connecticut that was almost perfect and that had been alive for 17 years. Oh well. Pretty funny though!

Riding the horses up the Mt. Wilson fire road just after the big non-stop rain storms we've had for the past week. First portion of the video is trotting up the mountain in the snow. Just a few months prior this area was completely burned by the Station Fire. Now it's covered in a ton of snow. Sorry for the unsteady hand...

Stellar Interferometer part 2
Posted by
HiggsMan
/
Comments: (0)
A stellar interferometer is built similar to Michaelson design in year 1919 that was placed in front of the 100 inch telescope at mount Wilson. Henrietta Leavitt had discovered how to find the distance of stars by parallax angle in 1912. Part 2 of this video completes and tests the assembly using the Optoform system. Although the 1 m baseline of this interferometer may not be sufficient to measure the diameter of stars, it is sufficient for planetary work. Michaelson utilized the same technique to measure the diameter of Jupiter's moons in 1890. For smaller stars, a much longer baseline is needed such as the Mark III long baseline (12 m) interferometer at Palomar that is designed, and run by JPL. The large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is also suitable for stellar interferometry with its 22.8 m combined aperture (two 8.4 m mirrors).

"Up In The Clouds" Driving around Mount Wilson June 14th, 2009 Just testing out the 5D mkii, now with the firmware update. With Los Angeles covered in gloom, Nora and I went to where you could break through the clouds. 35 minutes North of Los Angeles, up the 2, to Mt Wilson. Worth the drive. Beautiful views, and hidden places to have a nice lunch. Check the time lapse! For the hell of it, I put another sped-up dash-cam video at the end of the video. Don't throw up! :) Audio - Renegade Soundwave "Mash-up" (edited loop), available on the Thunder II CD Single at mutebank: www.recordstore.co.uk

Snowstorm blasts Colorado, Wyoming; delays flights
Posted by

DENVER An early blast of winter walloped some western states with deep snow and slowly pushed into Nebraska and Kansas Thursday, bringing blizzard conditions to the eastern plains and causing treacherous roads, closed schools and hundreds of canceled flights. The fall storm spread 3 feet of snow and left much higher drifts across parts of northern Utah, Wyoming and Colorado, before its leading edge hit neighboring states just to the east. Wind-driven snow built to blizzard conditions over much of eastern Colorado. The weather service warned most area roads would be impassible Thursday night because of blowing snow and near-zero visibility. The heaviest October snowfall in the Denver area in a decade forced the closure of hundreds of schools and businesses. Roads across the region remained snowpacked and icy. "Big storms like these, they seem to come around every 10 to 12 years," said Kyle Fredin, a National Weather Service meteorologist. Denver-based Frontier Airlin es, which is operated by Republic Airways Holdings, said it canceled 44 flights in and out of Denver International Airport. Other flights were delayed by up to four hours. United Airlines, the airport's dominant carrier with about 400 flights per day, canceled half its flights Thursday to prevent delays and cancelations from spilling over into Friday, spokesman Charlie Hobart said. Both airlines planned to operate full schedules Friday. Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon said crews were using 174 pieces of snow-removal equipment to keep runways and taxiways clear as they dealt with severe wind gusts. Cannon said two departure and two arrival runways were open. The airport received at least 16 inches of snow with 5-foot snow drifts east of Denver, the weather service said. The Colorado Department of Transportation closed a 140-mile stretch of Interstate 70 from near Denver to Burlington and 55 miles of Interstate 76 from Lochbuie to Fort Morgan. Plows struggled to keep up wit h the blowing snow, said CDOT spokesman Bob Wilson. No serious accidents were reported, likely because shuttered businesses meant fewer cars on the road, Wilson said. In Wyoming, road closures included a 40-mile stretch of Interstate 80 from Cheyenne to Laramie; a 35-mile span of Interstate I-25 from Wellington to Cheyenne; and a 200-mile stretch of I-80 west of Big Springs to Laramie, Wyo. Snow drifts were running up to 4 feet in Cheyenne and up to 6 feet 30 miles north of the city. The Wyoming Department of Transportation said it was unlikely Interstate 80 across the southeast part of the state would reopen until Friday. More than 120 accidents were reported across Wyoming Wednesday and Thursday but there were no fatalities. A winter storm warning was in effect until Friday morning for portions of western and north-central Nebraska, with forecasters predicting gusts of up to 35 mph and five to nine inches of snow by Friday from Imperial in southwest Nebraska toward Valenti ne near the South Dakota border. A foot of snow had fallen in Rushville in western Nebraska by Thursday afternoon. Three-foot drifts were reported elsewhere in western Nebraska. Northwestern Kansas was expected to get off easier but forecasters nevertheless posted blizzard warnings for some area where winds of 35 mph and up to 5 inches of snow were expected. The wintry weather also brushed South Dakota, where Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the far west was shut down. The storm began Tuesday and broke records for total October snowfall for Wyoming. It was the biggest October snowmaker in the Denver area since 1997, said Byron Louis, a weather service hydrologist in Boulder. Many schools in metro Denver stayed closed Thursday, but the University of Colorado in Boulder and Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where 17.5 inches fell, reopened a day after sending students home early. The snow and chilly weather didn't deter people from the prospect of free chicken. More than 100 people camped outside a new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Fort Collins overnight Thursday for a chance to win a year's worth of free weekly chicken meals. They huddled around propane heaters supplied by the store and were invited inside for hot chocolate and cookies just before bedding down in sleeping bags and tents. Denver's Friday forecast called for sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s.

Albert Michelson 20-foot Interferometer
Posted by
HiggsMan
/
Comments: (0)
Albert Michelson measured the diameters of Jupiter's moons by interferometry in the early 1890's in order to test the technique. Using the 12-inch refractor at California's Lick Observatory he covered the lens with a large screen that had two holes ("pick-off points") at separations of up to 12 inches to simulate different baselines. The diameters of the satellites were determined to be on the order of one arc second, which is approximately correct. By 1919, knowing that the diameters of stars appeared much smaller because of their great distances from Earth, Michelson and Francis Pease designed and built the 20-foot Stellar Interferometer. Here the 20 feet refers to the maximum baseline of the pick-off mirrors. It was installed atop the 100-inch telescope (shown above), the largest telescope in the world at the time. The maximum baseline possible was 20 feet because anything longer would hit the interior of the dome as the telescope moved from one part of the sky to another. The design of this instrument and the perforated screen used at Lick Observatory were the idea of the French scientist Hippolyte Fizeau (1819-1896), who was also the first person to measure the speed of light in a laboratory. In effect, the 100-inch telescope was being used as a large and stable optical bench capable of being pointed at different parts of the sky. The 100-inch telescope has a long history of being used in this way -- the natural guide star adaptive optics instrument on the 100-inch telescope has an optical bench bolted to the telescope at Cassegrain focus and an artificial guide star adaptive optics system is being developed at its coude focus. To observe with the 20-foot interferometer, the telescope was pointed at the target star and the two flat mirrors were moved inwards as far as possible (thereby giving the shortest baseline and the brightest fringes). The goal was to adjust the light path lengths so that the band of brightest fr inges would be carried to the eyepiece of the observer. It was easier to adjust the light path lengths and move the fringes to a fixed eyepiece than to move the observer to a fixed fringe location. This concept was also used in later interferometers. The fringes would be located manually by an observer. Once located, the relative fringe brightness was noted. Then the outer two mirrors would be moved apart and the measurement repeated. Eventually the fringes would disappear and the star would be "resolved". Doing this manually was very tedious and time consuming, which was a problem since the newly-commissioned 100-inch telescope in great demand. The diameters of only seven stars were successfully measured, all red giant stars: Betelgeuse, Arcturus, Antares, Aldebaran, Ras Algethi (Alpha Herculis), Scheat (Beta Pegasi), and Mira. The very close binary star Capella was also observed in December 1919 J. Anderson and elements of its orbit were successfully measured. Ho wever, many other smaller stars could not be resolved and it soon became apparent that baselines longer than 20 feet would be required
